Phenalkamine Curing Agents

Cardanol structure before mannich reaction and phenalkamine structure after mannich reaction.
Phenalkamines are biobased Mannich-type epoxy curing agents derived from cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL). They provide many of the same performance advantages as petroleum-based Mannich hardeners, with the added benefits of CNSL.

Key features:

  • Extremely fast cure and low-temperature reactivity (even below 0 °C)
  • Good chemical resistance and moisture tolerance
  • Non-blushing characteristics and smooth surface finish

Enhanced properties from the cardanol side chain:

  • Extended pot life and enhanced flexibility
  • Strong surface tolerance
  • Outstanding resistance to water and saltwater exposure

Additional benefits:

  • Several Cardolite phenalkamines are approved for use in food contact and potable water applications

Phenalkamine Benefits

High hydrophobicity

The long linear side chain of phenalkamines gives them high hydrophobicity, providing key advantages over other epoxy curing agent technologies. This hydrophobic nature helps counteract water sensitivity from phenolic hydroxyls and other formulation components, improving corrosion resistance and adhesion to wet or poorly prepared surfaces, such as water-saturated concrete.

Key benefits of phenalkamine hydrophobicity:

  • Improves corrosion resistance in challenging environments
  • Promotes strong adhesion on wet or poorly prepared surfaces
  • Minimizes the impact of moisture on resin bonds

Fast and low temperature cure

Phenalkamines deliver fast cure, even at low temperatures, offering significant advantages across a wide range of formulations. Their chemistry supports high-solids and solvent-free systems, enabling use in areas with limited ventilation or under immersion, while improving application productivity and allowing year-round operation even in cold or challenging environments.

Key benefits of fast, low-temperature cure:

  • Enables reliable application in cold or challenging conditions
  • Supports high-solids and solvent-free systems
  • Promotes early crosslinking for rapid protection and performance
  • Reduces the risk of failure due to unexpected conditions
