Phenalkamine Curing Agents

Cardanol structure before mannich reaction and phenalkamine structure after mannich reaction.

Phenalkamines are biobased Mannich-type epoxy curing agents derived from cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL). Like petroleum-based Mannich hardeners, they offer extremely fast cure, low-temperature reactivity (even below 0 °C), good chemical resistance, moisture tolerance, non-blushing characteristics, and smooth surface appearance.

The presence of a long aliphatic side chain from cardanol further imparts extended pot life, enhanced flexibility, strong surface tolerance, and outstanding resistance to water and saltwater exposure. Several Cardolite phenalkamines are also approved for use in food contact and potable water applications.

Phenalkamine Benefits

High hydrophobicity

The long linear side chain of phenalkamines provides high hydrophobicity, offering key advantages over other technologies. This hydrophobicity helps counteract water sensitivity from phenolic hydroxyls and other formulation components, improving corrosion resistance. Additionally, phenalkamines promote strong adhesion to wet or poorly prepared surfaces—such as water-saturated concrete—by minimizing the impact of surrounding moisture on the resin bond.

With over four decades of research, Cardolite has pioneered new developments in phenalkamine technology such as innovative solvent-free, low viscosity, and faster curing products.

Fast and low temperature cure

The fast and low-temperature cure of phenalkamines offers significant advantages across a wide range of formulations. These materials improve application productivity and enable year-round use, even in cold or challenging environments. Their chemistry also supports high-solids and solvent-free systems, making them ideal for use in areas with limited ventilation or under immersion.

By rapidly achieving a high degree of crosslinking, phenalkamines help ensure early protection and performance—reducing the risk of failure due to unexpected conditions.
